The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update for LG Optimus Black is more likely to come based on the stamp found on the official retail box as photographed by a blogger. Just recently, LG Canada said through a tweet that Optimus 2X and Black are most likely be left out of the fun because ICS update won’t be coming but later, all reports has proven the tweet wrong as users in South Korea received confirmation the sweet Ice Cream Sandwich update will be rolled out after all.
This issue has stirred LG community and the confusion spread like bushfire especially to users of either Optimus Black or Optimus 2X. The thing is LG Global hasn’t said anything official that denies or confirms the rumor that these devices would be getting a bump soon. Apparently, everything we heard about the ICS update for Black and 2X are based on rumors and unconfirmed reports.
However, retail boxes talk clearly. A blogger photographed a box of Optimus Black with model number LG-P970; a large white & green sticker says it is upgradable to Android 4.0 ICS. It does not, in anyway, confirms whether LG has already started developing the ICS firmware for this device or it is on the way to the phones of users.
Android enthusiasts who have been following LG’s habits of providing updates for its devices said that the photo could have been taken before the South Korean company announced it won’t release further updates for the Black and 2X.
Tech Covet watermarked and posted the photos to its site and claimed that “they” found it at the retail store. If this is true, the update should come real soon as it has already been a long wait for the users.
LG Optimus Black was released with Android 2.2 Froyo and received an official update to Gingerbread. With Cortex-A8 processor clocked at 1GHz and 512MB RAM, the device didn’t seem to have any problems with the stable GB OS. But considering ICS has a totally different architecture and require large amount of memory, Black’s specs might not be enough to ensure everything will work out perfectly after the update.
LG hasn’t provided any information about the ICS update and it could be because it’s still in the process of testing out everything or perhaps it’s not coming after all.
Sony’s 2011 Xperia models which also come with 512MB RAM will not be getting official ICS update simply because of the fairly low specs. This might also be the case for Optimus Black and 2X but apparently, only LG can confirm. But in fairness to this device, it has received pretty good reviews and feedback.
