Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy S3 Mini Rumored to Come Later This Year

There is a rumor that Samsung is working on two new high end smartphones that are set to be launched in the last quarter of this year.  The Galaxy S2 Plus and the S3 Mini are expected to hit the market before this year’s holiday season in a move widely seen as Samsung’s attempt to capitalize on the immense success of the S3 and the S2 phones – and in the same breath reach a wider audience with different phone needs.  This is however just a rumor as there is no proof that Samsung is working on anything else at the moment besides marketing the Galaxy Note and Note 2 tablet and counting the profits from the S3 launch in June.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is likely to go for around $200 while the improved Galaxy S2 Plus may go for between $250 and $350.  The big question is, why would Samsung work on these devices instead of developing entirely new gadgets?  If the rumor is true, it does not seem to make much sense for an improved version of an older smartphone released last year to cost more than a mini version of a newer smartphone, just a couple of months old.  Then again, Apple is already rumored to release the iPhone 5 sometime this year and Samsung, being a sworn enemy, may be working on pulling the rug under Apple’s feet by launching cheaper but somehow familiar devices ahead of, or during, iPhone 5’s launch.

Word is that the Galaxy S3 Mini may be touted as iPhone 4S’s competitor as it may feature quite impressive specs and features including a 5MP camera, a 4 inch WVGA Super-AMOLED screen and a Dual core processor.  Nothing is known about the features of the Galaxy S2 Plus phone yet from an article that Samsung posted briefly before pulling it down.

If it is going to be an improved version of the galaxy S2, then it is likely that the Galaxy S2 Plus will feature a 4.5 inch AMOLED screen, an 8 megapixel camera, a 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt memory.  The phone may come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or better still, Android Jelly Bean.

From the rumor, the Galaxy S2’s specs seem to be on a higher end than the Galaxy S3 Mini, which makes perfect sense if it is going to cost $100 to $150 more.  What I cannot understand is the strategy Samsung is using to introduce these phone and what, if there is any, their Agenda is.  It could be to promote their brand name while targeting mid-ranged smartphone buyers for the Christmas season or it could be aiming at undermining Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 release.  For now, we just have to wait and see.

What problems did you have? It was quite the opposite with me! The S2 didn’t work well, couldn’t connect do 2G normally and so on, while there was no problem with the S3 at all!

I’ve a Gs2, which works just fine. but I would not upgrade to gs3 because of phone size which doesn’t fit so well in pocket.
By introducing a galaxy s3 mini, Samsung address the need of users willing to keep a small form factor phone.
Also, reason for iPhone to remain at 3.5 or 4 inch is just that you can reach all the screen with fingers from the hand holding the device.
It is already not possible on g s2 with 4.3″. So gs3 and notes are to be used with 2 hand.
So the form factor from galaxy s3 mini will be very appealing to me…
