Samsung Offers a $4.08m app Challenge

The South Korean company Samsung is calling on all budding and experienced app developers as it announced it is looking for new and innovative applications for their portable devices, with the launch of the ‘Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012’. The new Samsung product has taken the digital world by a storm increasing the profits of the Company significantly across the globe.

The initiative is designed specifically to search for apps to take advantage of two of its main products, the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tab.  In particular in relation to the Note, Samsung is looking for developers who can come up with creative ways of incorporating the S Pen into their apps.  The S Pen is an advanced pen-input technology used on the Galaxy Note, making it easy to create and consume more content whilst on the go.

The challenge is designed to provide a total of a slightly odd amount of $4.08m in cash prizes to be divided amongst the 80 judged winners.  There are a variety of categories, including the previously mentioned ‘best use of S Pen’ and more straightforwardly ‘best game’.  As well as the cash prizes, there is additional incentive in the form of substantial marketing support to promote the most innovate apps chosen, including being part of a joint marketing campaign for TV commercials and print advertisements.

So if this is all sounding appealing so far, what do you need to do?  All developers need to do to take part and register on the dedicated website  Once you have developed you app, you should make your app available on the Samsung app store.

Don’t delay though, with the clock already ticking towards the deadline for entry of 30 September 2012.

30 winning games and 30 winning apps will be selected purely on the basis of downloads numbers with a grand prize of $200,000 for each overall winner.

20 more winners will be selected by a panel of judges based on how well they make use of the Samsung S Pen.

Simon Stanford, Samsung UK and Ireland’s Vice President, telecommunications and networks said “At Samsung we want to provide opportunities and support for the development of innovative apps that make use of our hardware technology.  The Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012 is a real opportunity for both established and budding app developers to secure funding and marketing support.  It’s an exciting project and we’re looking forward to seeing what these developers create”.

The move is claimed to be one that Samsung will hope makes them stand out from its fellow Android-based devices.  One potential integration could soon be with the Galaxy Note 2 device, as reports surrounding the company rumoured that they are planning to reveal their latest device in August at the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin.

Samsung is just the latest company to award contract and cash prizes to people who come up with innovative developments, following on from a recent proposal by Amazon Studios to undertake monthly ‘audition style’ reviews to find original series for their streaming service.
