Lot has been spoken about rumored iPad Mini already. Friends at GottaBeMobile have got their hands on exclusive pictures of iPad Mini engineering sample. The pictures give a rough idea of the all new iPad Mini design, and also hint few features of the fresh device.
According to GBM, the photos originate from a reliable insider from the Apple supply chain. The source apparently provided iPhone 5’s engineering sample photos as well. The design sample is a plastic mold that could be possibly used in the mass production process. If the pictures are true, it is the first substantial design update since 2010.
Let’s take a look at design features of the new iPad mini.
iPad mini Design: The new iPad mini will be a bit thinner than the current generation iPad. The bottom image shows a smaller dock connecter slot, which could be the 19 inch dock connecter that was also rumored on iPhone 5. The leaked pictures show two speakers on either side of dock connector on the base as opposed to current generation having just one, which could also mean that the third generation of iPad will be more of a multimedia device, with better sounding speakers. The flaw in the current model is that when you hold the device, your hand tends to cover the speaker, and Apple seems to have fixed the flaw by flattening the base.
From the picture, the new iPad is found to be 185.67mm wide, 241.3mm tall and 9.39mm thick. Comparing to recently launched Google’s Nexus 7 tablet, iPad Mini will 23.67mm wider than the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 tablet is198.5mm high, which means iPad Mini could be a little taller than Google’s 7-inch tablet too.
Screen Size: The engineering sample doesn’t have markers for display and bezel, but if we go by the rumors, iPad Mini will be using a 7.85 inches display. Also, there are rumors suggesting that the next-gen iPad will be using IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) display from Sharp, which will allow the device to be thinner while having a brighter display. IGZO screens can apparently handle 330 ppi, which could also mean that the new iPad will be boasting Retina Display. This could be very well possible because going by the news, Sharp entered into a partnership with Foxconn, the manufacturer of Apple devices, recently.
Summing up the rumors until now:
- The new iPad would feature a 7.85-inch display with 1024×768 resolution. The display could be Sharp’s IZGO display, which hints that the device can also have Retina Display.
- The price tag is rumored to be $299.
- Is expected to launch in October, along with iPhone 5.
- 16 GB model expected.
- The device may support 4G LTE connectivity.
