Thrive and Thrive 7 Tablets by Toshiba Delay for Android 4.0 Update

Posted on Jun 23 2012 - 7:30pm by Glenn

Toshiba has announced that it will be pushing out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Toshiba Thrive and Toshiba Thrive 7 tablets this coming fall. However, it didn’t declare the reason behind the delay.

This statement has caused some disappointment among tablet owners, some of whom had been hoping for a spring or summer release of the upgrade. Ice Cream Sandwich, which has already been made available for many devices, promises to enhance the Android experience by means of adding phone capabilities, providing fixes to known issues, and introducing an striking new graphical user interface.

Some speculate that there are simply too many bugs that need to be fixed and compatibility issues to be settled on the Toshiba tablet PCs before the devices would be ready for Ice Cream Sandwich. Meanwhile, others believe that Toshiba might simply be busy with other things at the moment, and the ICS updates are not its priority. Still others think that Toshiba might be waiting for the forthcoming Android OS before releasing Android 4.0.

In any case, Toshiba’s chosen schedule is generally expected to undermine the wow factor that the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich on the tablet PCs would bring. The reason, of course, is that the next iteration of Android OS, nicknamed Jellybean, is likely to be released in the coming month on the much-awaited Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Still, as they say, it’s better for things to come late than to never arrive. At the very least, Toshiba Thrive and Toshiba Thrive 7 users will have something to look forward to this coming fall that will replace their Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS.

To refresh the reader’s memories, the Toshiba Thrive comes with a 10.1-inch display, and a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. Meanwhile, the Toshiba Thrive 7 has a 7-inch display and the same processor. Both devices offer Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, and Resolution+ Video Enhancement.

The thrive will be the last Toshiba product I bought, they promised ICS by late spring, 2012, now its fall2012, anyone want to bet 2013? They put ICS on their newer tablet, right out of the box, on its release, but haven’t got time to support their previous sales. Thrive is a good product, but Toshiba support stinks, so they can count me out as a future customer.
