Sony is relying on social media power to boost interest for the next Xperia smartphone. The device, which remains a mystery to this date, will be unveiled on June 21 to 22. However, fans of the Sony Xperia page on Facebook are given the chance to click a fast forward button that will make a countdown on a Sony Xperia app tick faster. Basically, the more people that click on the fast forward button, the earlier Sony will unveil the device. As of press time, there are only 5 days and several hours left until the product unveiling, which has been moved to around June 18.
This publicity stunt is rare because companies often withhold information about new product launches until the day of the launch itself. Often, strict security measures are put in place, minimizing leaks about the specifications and features of the device. Sony, however, poses a different strategy by giving fans the power to determine the launch date. The move, of course, also gauges how much interest there is among users of Facebook, granted that they know about the app from being a fan of the Sony Xperia phones or they have known about it elsewhere.
To add to the excitement, Sony is also running a contest that has the mystery phone for the price. Users who are interested in entering need to click more on the app, answer some questions, as well as give an e-mail address.
Meanwhile, the mystery phone is speculated to be a global version of the Xperia GX, an LTE-enabled phone that had been exclusively available in the Japanese market. The Xperia GX features a 4.6-inch 720p HD Reality Mobile Bravia Engine display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 16 GB of storage capacity, HDMI output, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, and a 13 MP rear camera.
Already, Sony has released three Xperia phones this year, including the Xperia S, the Xperia P, and the Xperia U.
