Microsoft finally has a Window 8 tablet of its own

Microsoft’s mysterious event is finally over, and we all know now that the rumors were true. We finally have a [easyazon-link keywords=”windows tablet” locale=”us”]Windows tablet[/easyazon-link] from the Redmond based software giant, or can we say we have two tablets? Well, even though both of them look almost the same, they are different internally. Let’s get into the details later. To begin with, Microsoft announced two new Windows 8 based tablets at last night’s event. They are called the Surface tablets. One is Surface tablet for Windows RT, which runs on Nvidia’s popular Tegra 3 processor. The other one is a higher end Surface tablet for Windows 8 which runs on Intel’s new Ivy Bridge series of processors.

This is all we know about the processors now, none of the companies are yet ready to give out the specifics on what processors are going to be used on the final builds of the tablet. But Microsoft sure seems to be up for the game. It wants to give the biggies, Apple and Google, a good competition. Both Apple and Google have their own strong tablet platform with the iPad and hundreds of tablets based on the Google Android operating system.

“It’s a PC that is a great tablet, and a tablet that is a great PC,” said Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows and Windows Live Division.

Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg says:

It’s a bold move on the part of Microsoft. This is a real change in strategy for them, and it’s certainly a vote of no confidence for their partners. This shows how high the stakes are. There is competitive pressure from Apple that is clearly a threat to their business. Steve Ballmer seemed to be channeling Steve Jobs on stage, saying hardware and software have to be designed to together.

Panos Panay, the general manager of the newly announced Surface division said:

When you put it in your hands, it feels elegant. When you touch it, you’re going to want to old it, I promise you.

Whatever the device may feel like, ultimately you are going to use it mostly for internet browsing and light productivity work. These tablets are of no use for engineers who work on really heavy weight software installed on our computers. For us, there is no alternative to our laptops.
