Microsoft announcing iPad-killer next Monday

There have been a lot of rumors this week indicating that Microsoft is working on a new product that would put it in direct competition with Apple. Well, that could mean a lot of things. In fact, the two companies are in direct competition for years now. But this one is a bit more interesting. The Redmond software giant has already sent out invitations to a “major” announcement in Hollywood next Monday, and the event is said to be of Apple style. What more? The company has not yet disclosed the location yet.

Rumors say that the company will be releasing a touch screen tablet, manufactured in house by Microsoft itself. This is going to be a bit like the Xbox 360 then. This rumoured tablet is rumoured to be running the Windows RT version of Windows 8, which is optimized for tablets.

Hollywood blog The Wrap cites “an individual with knowledge of the company”, who claims the software giant would be “making a foray into a new hardware category that would put the company in direct competition with rival Apple” — tablets.

This is not a new project for the company. Microsoft had tried to build a touch screen tablet hybrid in house sometime between 2008 and 2010. The project was called the ‘Courier’. But after the rival company, Cupertino tech giant Apple, released the iPad, the Microsoft management killed the project. It seems like the management has finally given the thumbs up again.

If you remember, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had once demonstrated an incompletely baked version of the Windows 8 RT on a third party tablet. The version of the operating system is designed to run on desktop and laptop computers, smart phones, tablets and netbooks in similar ways.

If you are excited, you will have to wait till next week to know the results of the event. So keep waiting.
