Usually, it so happens that Apple is on the suing side and some other company gets sued for either infringing Apple’s patents, or copying the design, or something. But today, the scenario has reversed, Apple got sued. This is not the first time this is happening. But it is nice to see Apple getting sued because the Cupertino tech giant acts as if someone has made a very wrong accusation and that it is the only company in the world which works according to the law or God.
Anyway, coming back to the story here, Kodak is the company which has sued Apple this time. This might come as a shock to some people we all know that Apple and Kodak go back a long way as partners. Yes, the two companies had worked together some time in the early 90s, and now they are in a place where they are suing each other.
On what grounds is Kodak suing Apple? This is the next question. When Apple and Kodak were together, they came up with new technologies to get things done on gadgets. For example, the viewing of photos on LCD screens was a technology that the two companies invented together. So the patents, well, should they be shared? I don’t know about that, but that is the patent we are talking about today.
The patent lies with Kodak today, which is a “part of Kodak’s digital-capture portfolio, which the company said includes more than 700 patents for devices such as digital cameras, smartphones and tablets, and has generated more than $3 billion in revenues since 2001” – Reuters.
Also, we all know that Kodak is going bankrupt these days. So it needs to stabilize by doing something. And the best thing to do is to sell the patents it has, which includes the patent in question. And since the company is selling the patent, on which, I guess even Apple has a part of ownership, Apple has interfered in the selling process.
So Kodak has sued Apple to keep it away from the sale of a large patent portfolio. How will this end? Well, only time can tell.
