Bigger Battery for MacBook Pro Equals Larger Cost for Consumers

To power its high resolution Retina Display, the new MacBook Pro will need a larger battery that will cost more when it needs replacing. The larger battery will be around 23 percent bigger than the current notebook’s battery, and will carry a price tag of $199. This figure is $70 or 54 percent more than the present battery’s $129 cost.

Apple had introduced built-in batteries to laptops ever since the first MacBook Air was launched in 2009. Later, it brought the technology to the now-defunct 17-inch MacBook Pro. At present, only two sizes are left in the new MacBook Pro line, a 13-inch and a 15-inch model, and both sport built-in batteries. Apple’s rationale behind the built-in battery was that it helped the design save space.

This also enabled them to pack more battery into the device, and by extension, adding more battery life to the MacBook. However, the integrated design likewise disallowed users to buy a battery and replace it themselves. Users needing to change the laptop battery already needed to go to Apple to have them fit a new battery.

This larger battery which now comprises one-third of the device’s internal parts is only one of the changes that Apple made on the design of the Mac Book Pro. In addition, Apple has completely overhauled the laptop’s design and made it more lightweight. It has furthermore thrown in an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M / Intel HD 4000 GPU as well as USB 3.0 ports and HDMI output. Its processor has been updated, as well, to a 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU to compete with other high-end notebooks in the market that sport the same technology.

Meanwhile, its Retina Display, the main culprit for the added battery replacement cost, has a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels that to date has not been seen on other laptop models. This display gave the same bragging rights to Apple when it launched the most recent iPad. That said, some parts like an optical drive and an Ethernet port are not present on the device and leave some to be desired for Apple’s top-of-the-line laptop models.

For these specifications, Apple has chosen a costly starting price of $2,199 for the new MacBook Pro.
