More rumors about Facebook’s phone come out

Just yesterday we saw some rumors about the world’s social network giant, Facebook, building its own smart phone. And today, we have some new stuffs to talk about. Reportedly, the social network giant has been hiring Apple’s employees, those who have worked on the development team of the iPhone and also the iPad, for building its own smart phone, with a new operating system developed by Facebook itself.

According to NY Times, this news comes from “employees of Facebook and several engineers who have been sought out by recruiters there, as well as people briefed on Facebook’s plans.”

The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, and one who worked on the iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said.

This is a good news. Actually, Facebook has already tried a couple of times to get into the smart phone world very seriously. If you remember, it worked closely with one of the best smart phone manufacturers, HTC, some time back to release Facebook centric smart phones. And the companies did release a couple of smart phones, the HTC Salsa and the HTC Status. But unfortunately, both of these saw very poor reactions from the user base.

One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used, he said. Another former Apple hardware engineer was recruited by a Facebook executive and was told about the company’s hardware explorations.

The integration of Facebook with Apple’s iPhone failed very badly, after Facebook messed it up with then Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. Just a year after that, Apple released a new version of iOS with heavy Twitter integration instead of Facebook. So I guess it is time for Facebook to come up with something really awesome. And I am also hoping for the same.
