Gavin Bowman and Craig Sharpe are the two co-founders of the game development company Retro Dreamer. The Retro Dreamer team set out to make popular puzzle games and originally tried their luck with a puzzler called Double Take.
DoubleTake was released in January of 2012 and to date has seen less than 5,000 downloads in the Google Play store. While every game developer wants to have a big mega hit, it seems that Sharpe and Bowman couldn’t figure out why they had such a low number of downloads. They added the game to the Amazon app store and weren’t pleased with the results their either.
So for their next time at bat Retro Dreamer tried something different. They didn’t want to produce another game that’s actually fun, but turns to poop in the app stores, so they went with something everyone can appreciate, and that’s, well, poop.
More after the break
Bowman told VentureBeat:
“I think most app developers think about making silly apps like this from time to time, especially when things aren’t going well.
The response has been much better than their original game DoubleTake. Their friends and family circle that helped beta test the game, gave them great feedback so they pushed on and launched it in the Amazon App store and the Google Play Store.
Comparatively speaking Happy Poo is doing ten times better than it’s predecessor. Google Play store downloads are in the 10,000-50,000 range rather than the 1,000-5,000 range of DoubleTake. It’s doing even better in the Amazon store.
“This app would never have hit the market if we’d had to submit it for approval. We would have been over the idea before I uploaded the binary and we’d have pulled it down. Being able to get it out there instantly and get the amusing reactions from our friends was the only reason this wasn’t just another discarded silent vent.” Bowman Said.
Happy Poo has already spawned some spinoff games including Happy Poo For 2, Happy Poo Jump, and kid friendly game Wash The Dishes.
