Back on October 6th Sony announced that it’s intention to buy out their partner Ericsson in Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Now just a little over three months later the merger has been approved by the European Commission.
Sony’s CEO Sir Howard Stringer announced at a press conference at the International Consumer Electronics show that the newly formed unit of Sony for mobile devices would be called Sony Mobile Communications. We’ve heard from several sources that some of their newest, yet to be released devices have carried the branding of both Sony Ericsson and Sony Mobile Communications.
Sony’s buyout of Ericsson is $1.05 billion dollars and includes a treasure trove of patents and cross licensing with other Ericsson intellectual property.
