G.I. Jobs top 100 military friendly employers list draws from a sample of 5,000 companies who have an annual revenue of more than $500 million dollars.  The magazine takes into consideration things like recruiting efforts, percentage of new hires with priority military service and policies towards National Guard and Reserve service.

“At Verizon, we believe that hiring veterans is not only the right thing to do, but also makes perfect business sense,” said Al Torres, vice president – talent management, Verizon. “With their mission-driven attitudes, superb training, technical skills and leadership capabilities, our 12,000 veterans play a crucial role in making Verizon the best in our industry.”

In regards to Reserve and National Guard service, Verizon has one of the best corporate leave policies in the country.  When a Verizon employee is activated for National Guard or Reserve duty Verizon pays that employee the difference between their military pay and Verizon pay and continues their full benefits for up to 36 months.

Verizon offers other resources to Veterans above and beyond a lot of similarly sized companies. For instance, Verizon opens up their legal department to provide pro bono work for Veterans returning from duty and also Veterans injured during active duty.
