We have to give it to our Italian friends at NotebookItalia.com for getting the scoop on this story. Toshiba released a new 10.1 inch Honeycomb tablet today during their keynote at IFA. At last year’s IFA conference Toshiba released the Toshiba Folio tablet which failed to catch on before it went on sale in the United States and was pulled very quickly from the UK.
Their second tablet, the Toshiba Thrive (AT100 elsewhere) was met with lukewarm reviews by everyone except thedroidguy who still really loves this tablet. Why? Because every other 10.1″ Honeycomb tablet looks remarkably like the next on paper and in person. The Thrive is to date, the most productive tablet available with it’s full sized SD card slot, HDMI output, file manager and full sized USB port.
The Toshiba AT 200 (Excite) doesn’t have any of those things. It does have a microUSB slot (most tablets do), a microSD slot (several tablets do) and a mini-hdmi port (many tablets do). One of the differentiators will come from the size and weight of the AT200. It weighs in at just 558 grams and it’s just 7.7mm thick.
The Toshiba AT100 tablet also came with a user replaceable battery which was one of the reasons that the tablet was both heavy and thick. This tablet does not enjoy that feature although Toshiba says the battery life is a solid 8 hours, even with continuous video. Toshiba is saying that the AT200 will release by the end of the year in Europe and the US.
