Last year the world was a buzz as Sony Ericsson planned to take another Sonny brand and mesh it together with Android.. The brand, PlayStation, came out in the form of the Sony Xperia Play in early 2011.
The Sony Xperia Play was rumored for a good six months before it debuted at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain in February. With the tragic earthquakes in Japan and the resulting supply chain problems the Sony Xperia Play launched later than planned on Verizon and alongside a few other major Android releases, like the LG Revolution.
The Xperia Play brought a unique form factor and familiar PlayStation controller like interface to Android. However the phone itself has been met with mixed reviews. We do have to hand it to Sony Ericsson though for some innovative thinking and partnering with the corporate parent, Sony.
More after the break
Now Sony Ericsson is looking to take on Apple’s iPhone using a brand that made Sony pretty famous on US shores. Sure they’ve been in the home/consumer electronics world for quite sometime, but tell me someone in their 20’s-40’s who didn’t own one kind of Sony WalkMan or another. I know I owned several, in fact we could never keep enough AA batteries in the house.
Sony created the walkman, the personal music player. It innovated from the cassette tape player to the discman, even minidisc and mp3. Now Sony Ericsson is going to release a new device called “The Live With Walkman”. They promise it will be an Android device with a new social music experience.
“Consumers want smartphones to deliver a rich and social entertainment experience,” said Nikolaus Scheurer, head of product marketing at Sony Ericsson. “Rather than a one-dimensional music experience, they want instant and seamless access to new content, combined with the ability to share and connect with their friends.” (source: Yahoo)
This is no innovation in itself, I mean every Android device can play mp3’s however Sony Ericsson is going to revive the Walkman brand for this time out to bat. It has also been revealed that the “Live with walkman” (what a dumb name), will feature a hardware walkman button with instant access to the music player.
Sony plans on coupling this walkman branded phone with their own cloud based music format along with unique ways to share your music with others.
The device itself is said to have a curved glass design and a 3.2″ screen. It also features a 1ghz processor, front facing camera and 5mp rear facing camera with auto focus and 720p HD video capability.
Earlier this month HTC shocked the tech world when they said they had big news only to announce a partnership with DreBeats for enhanced sound experiences on their smartphones. At that time we at thedroidguy postulated loudly that Sony could do this better. It looks like they are at least going to attempt that.
