Research firm NPD has released their study on connected devices and wireless carriers. They found that AT&T leads the tablet connected device category, leading the industry in sales of cellular capable tablets.
While AT&T leads in connected tablet sales NPD’s Brad Akyuz warns that AT&T should be watching over their shoulder for Verizon. Verizon Wireless now carries the iPad 2 along with 3 cellular capable Android tablets. The original Samsung Galaxy Tab, The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G/LTE and the Motorola Xoom 3G all grace the shelves at Verizon Wireless stores.
The NPD study shows that cellular customers go to their wireless carrier where they purchased their phone to get other connected data products including tablets. AT&T held an exclusive advantage with Apple’s products prior to February of this year. The assumption here is that AT&T iPhone customers went back to AT&T for a connected iPad.
NPD found that Verizon Wireless is the clear leader in both mobile hotspots (42% of the market) and USB sticks (44% of the market). There is one percentage point (in AT&T’s favor) between AT&T and Verizon for embedded notebooks.
