Stephen Erickson (Stericson) To Head Android Development At Meporter & We’ve Got Another Opening

Posted on Jul 12 2011 - 10:31am by Kyle

Every once in a while, when the time is right and there are a lot of companies looking we post a Developer Job Fair Friday post.  These posts are targeted at the thousands of developers who have been working on the side, at night, in the wee hours of the morning, in the bedroom, basement or at the kitchen table perfecting their craft.  If you comb through Twitter, XDA, RootsWiki or any other developer site, there are always hundreds of people crying out that they wish they could do this full time.

We actually get more emails, Gtalk messages, Direct Messages and now Google+ messages from people who want to work in Android “Full Time” than we do messages from people complaining we tweet the same story too much.

Well now get off your ass and do something about it, Stericson did.

more after the break

Around six weeks ago Stericson was down in the dumps.  As a distant “twitter” friend of his and someone who has met him in person at the Big Android Barbecue, I felt drawn to ask him why the sad Facebook and Twitter messages. If you’re a friend of Stericson’s you know the time of which I speak.  Since Stericson and I both work our asses off on a million things it took a little while to connect but once we did he let me in on a few things, that are for the most part common knowledge to his friends and followers.

– While he worked at Clearwire and they were decent to him, Clearwire isn’t necessarily a mecca for job security these days

– After recently going through a divorce and finally braving the seas to meet someone he wanted to get out of Florida

– He wanted a job, a full time job, in Android. Afterall he has been developing virtually since day 1, he does great work and is a respected member of our community.

While there are mixed reviews of Thedroidguy and some have been misled to think Im a total douchebag, a lot of people know when it comes right down to it I’m a pretty good guy. And no one can dispute that thedroidguy and thedroidguy team is very well connected.  We do this 36 hours a day 500 days a year. No in reality we work on Thedroidguy bringing news, events and more a good 18 hours a day 6 to 7 days a week.  In fact in talking with someone a few weeks ago I said something that really illustrates how much/hard we work. I asked this person “When was the last time you were home for a whole week”, obviously this guys answer was um, last week.  Even to this posting  I’m still trying to figure out when the last time I was home for a week was… but enough about this. The point is, although some have heard some negative things  or been swayed by opinions of people who’ve never met me or met me on one occasion, Stericson wanted my help finding him a job.

That was great because I knew where Stericson wanted to move and my good friends at MePorter.com wanted my help to find them the best Android developer available.  Hands down most of you will agree that Stericson fits that bill. In the beginning of June our Editor at Large, Cameron Wright (Cynakiloptimist) and myself had dinner with the folks at meporter.com and highlighted our thoughts about Stericson and what he could bring to Meporter.com. Stericson finished that off by having a great phone interview and follow up interview.

Although the job looked like a shoe in and everything has been going well over the last 3 weeks or so, Stericson and Meporter finally closed on the deal this past week when he was in the DC area spending time with his new friend.

So TDG it’s rather douchey of you to spend 585 words patting yourself on the back… That’s not the purpose of this post though.

We’ve got another one. The great people at 1up.me are looking to bring their revolutionary ipad/iphone games and game platform, called “the connect platform”  to Android.

Check out their website and view the video below to get a better understanding of what 1up does.  However this opportunity is great for the Android developer that’s a major sports fan.

1up.me is looking for a full time developer that will stay part of the team permanently even after the original port to Android is complete. Right now they have a Major League Baseball licensed game and next up of course is Football with NHL Hockey and NBA basketball in the not so distant future.

This is a well paying full time job in Android development from a company of solid folks who have a killer concept and first game out for iPad/iPhone.  They understand how important Android is to their success and this is real.  They’re funded and ready to rock.  Stericson is now off the market but we want someone as good (if not better lol) for this opportunity.

If you’ve been whining that you want to do Android full time then get off your ass and do something about it.

Send a cover letter and resume to [email protected] keep in mind that Stericson had no formal Android development job so in your cover letter highlight some of the successes you’ve had so far in Android, maybe some links to project work and talk about what drives you.

Stop imagining what life would be like if you can work in Android all day long.  Although I’m not personally a developer and it may sound like every now and then I complain about working too many hours or traveling too many days but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world, I love what I do and you can too.  You can also ping me via email or G+ if you have questions about the opportunity but to put it in perspective for you, Stericson is now making from his development position, what he used to make from Clearwire and all his paid apps and side projects combined.

Be aware that 1up had an Android developer who “flaked out” so get your stuff together and apply!
