The unofficial Samsung Blog, Sammyhub.com is reporting that Samsung Mobile is working on a glasses-free 3D Android phone. This new device dubbed the “Galaxy 3D” would put Samsung in the ring with the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC Evo 3D.
Samsung dismissed the idea of 3D technology on a smartphone earlier in the year at MWC. Samsung Mobile UK’s Head of Product Management, Jim Powell said at MWC “We are world leaders in 3D, but we haven’t seen a need for 3D on mobiles as yet…”. If Sammyhub’s sources are correct than “yet” could be right now.
More after the break
Many Android enthusiasts debate whether 3D is a novelty or a sustainable feature. We have had the LG Optimus 3D in the office since May and have had an Evo 3D almost as long. Aside from testing for the benefit of our readers we haven’t found a use for the 3D camera. It’s also important to note that we do have a 3D television and thought it may be fun to shoot 3D movies with either phone and watch them however, again, aside from product testing we haven’t found a real use.
On the other hand, the 3D technology on the display side is where there is a definite benefit. It is a lot of fun playing 3D games on a handheld device. To some it may cause nausea but if your head can handle it, that may be where the technology pays off.
Sammy Hub is reporting that Samsung’s first trek into the 3D Android world will include a Samsung 1.2ghz processor, 3D LCD display and dual 8mp rear facing stereoscopic cameras and an HD TV Out?
