Starbucks Releases App To Android Includes Pay With Your Phone

Starbucks has been working on being a little bit ahead of the curve when it comes to technology.  Through their mobile apps on other operating systems they’ve been testing out pay with your phone.

With the Starbucks app you can purchase a pre-paid Starbucks card at any of their 8 billion locations (lol). You can then load that card onto your Starbucks app and recharge it while on the go.  At participating Starbucks locations you can use your Starbucks app to pay for your purchase with your phone, just swipe and go.

Starbucks has just announced that their app is available in the Android market. In reality the pay with your phone service works at 6800 Starbucks locations. In addition, Starbucks is going to equip 1000 Safeway grocery store Starbucks locations with pay with your phone service as well.  They hope to complete this in July.

More after the break

“The expansion of our mobile payment footprint has been driven by customer interest and input. With the addition of Starbucks for Android to the Starbucks app line-up, a Starbucks mobile payment app may now be used on approximately 90 percent of smartphones currently in use,” said Adam Brotman, vice president, general manager, Digital Ventures at Starbucks Coffee Company.

The Starbucks for Android app works with any Android device running Android 2.1 or higher.  In addition to pay with your phone it also features:

Manage your card account
Reload your card balance
Check your My Starbucks Rewards Status
Find nearby Starbucks stores

After the pay with your phone feature the reload your card balance feature is the second best feature of the app. Simply use a credit or debit card and you can reload your prepaid balance using your Android phone.

Starbucks used their customer feedback portal MyStarbucksidea in determining how valuable an Android application would be.

“We’ve received a tremendous number of requests on MyStarbucksIdea for a Starbucks app for Android,” says Brotman. “We’re excited to introduce an Android app that our customers can use as part of their daily routines.”

Brady Brewer, Vice President Starbucks Card and Loyalty, also added

“While mobile payment is the top feature, customers’ next favorites are the ability to reload their Starbucks Card and track their progress toward their next free drink in the My Starbucks Rewards program.”
