According to a leaked document received by sprintfeed.com, the original 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab will receive an update to Android 2.3. The update could arrive over the air as soon as next Tuesday.
It’s hard to believe that at this time last year the 7″ Android tablet with Android 2.2 Froyo, was the most anticipated Android device. In fact we traveled all the way to Berlin, Germany to be part of the official launch with Samsung last summer.
Samsung released the follow up to the 7″ version, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 earlier this month. They still have another tablet in the Galaxy Tab line, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 to release later this summer.
Although Android 3.x Honeycomb is the version of Android designed specifically for tablets. Since Samsung didn’t wait for Honeycomb and opted to go with Froyo (the phone version of Android available at launch) the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ is following a phone release path.
If the news from this leak is in fact true (which it looks authentic) it will put the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ in the same arena as the recently released HTC Flyer and HTC Evo View 4G.
This news only pertains to the 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sprint. There’s been no word on the other carriers or the Wi-Fi only version.
