App Of The Week: Poynt

As a faithful smartphone user, the concept of having things “on the go” is something I am regularly spoiled with. Social networking, communication, productivity apps such word processors and calculators, everything is on the go. One thing we do often need when on the go, is directions. When I say directions, I mean more than turn-by-turn navigation, or MapQuest. Sometimes we need a little “direction” on where to go, what movie to see, what to eat, and even where to fill up. Poynt is an app in the Android Market that really takes care of a lot of our problems.

Poynt is an app that literally “points” you in the right direction when you’re out and about. Teamed up with services like SuperPages, Poynt is really one of the best apps I have found that does what it does. Poynt offers several ways to help you get where you’re going, and who you’re going with. You can search for businesses directly, meaning you just type the name of a business into the search bar, and Poynt will find the nearest locations. When you select a business you are given the option to call them, find them on a map, get directions (navigation by Google Maps), and you can share the destination with your friends.

Another feature of Poynt is the ability to look up people, by name, phone number, or address. Yes, this is a little weird, but in many situations it can also be very helpful when trying to hang out with someone when you just can’t remember their number, or lost their address. Poynt also allows you to search for restaurants. You can search by specific restaurants, ones that are nearby, or by a certain type of cuisine. This really makes finding a place to eat easier, and Poynt integrates Google Navigation right into the app so it’s easier to get where you are going.

Poynt also allows for finding movies, whether it’s by movie or showtime. You can view where the nearest theaters are, what they are playing, and when. One really cool feature is the ability to buy tickets integrated right into the app itself, so it’s not necessary to go between apps therefore cutting the time it takes to find a movie and get there. Not only can you find movies this way, but events are also on board. Poynt has a really good way of finding not just events, but things like $.29 wing nights, and all kinds of things at community centers and places where events are being held.

Poynt also has another really cool feature, and this one might just be my favorite. Poynt can locate the nearest gas stations and compare prices to see which is selling gas the cheapest. Obviously, at 16 this is really helpful for me because I’m trying to go everywhere I can, but also not spend every dime I have. I’m also pretty positive anyone of any age would like to buy gas at a cheaper. Either way, no matter the age, Poynt offers this feature and I absolutely love it.

Poynt is an awesome app that really helps people get where they need to go, and keeps everything in one app making it even easier. I really like that instead of trying to compete with other services, Poynt has just integrated things like navigation right into that app. It is currently free in the Android Market. This app is really a one-of-a-kind, and that is why it’s been chosen for this week’s App of the Week.
