Motorola Droids Seeing Gingerbread Soon?

According to an employee from Motorola, Droid phones that are currently on Android 2.2 (Froyo) will e seeing an update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) by as early as the third quarter of this year. Of course, this is only if Verizon gives the okay to do so.

In a response to impatient customer questions on the Motorola Support Forums, an employee responded that the the company can not give an exact date for the update.

“I can say that the Droid X update is currently scheduled to be released before the end of the second quarter of this year or sooner. The other updates are currently scheduled to be released before the end of the third quarter or sooner.”

The above estimates are dependant on Verizon approving the OTA (over the air) updates,” the spokesperson continued.

Last year Motorola and Verizon launched quite a few Droid devices these included the Droid X, the Droid 2, Droid Pro and also the Droid 2 Global. All of these devices are currently still running on the Android operating system 2.2

The newest addition to the Android OS in code named Gingerbread, and had made its big debut in December on the Samsung Nexus S. In turn it is quite understandable that Motorola Droid owners like many others want to know where their piece of Gingerbread is.

Adding to the on going frustrations that Droid owners are experiencing, Motorola and Verizon are getting ready to launch the newest Droid device this Thursday, the Motorola Droid X2 which will be running Android’s Gingerbread right out of the box.

According to Google, since the end of April only 4.3 percent of Android users are currently using the six month old Android 2.3operating system.
