Microsoft Silverlight Coming To Android Via Moonlight Dev Crew

| April 15, 2011 | 5 Comments

Microsoft Silverlight allows for rich interactive media content to be viewed in web browsers via their flash plug-in and is similar to Adobe’s Flash Player. There are many websites that take advantage of the plug-in, one of which is Netflix that uses the Silverlight plug-in to stream their content. Many Android users have been waiting to see the Silverlight plug-in become available, but have yet to see it happen. At least that was true until the Moonlight Dev Crew stepped in.

The Moonlight Dev Crew, the same ones that brought Microsoft’s Silverlight to Linux desktops, has been working on doing the same for the Android operating systems. During the MIX11 event in Vegas, The Moonlight Crew demonstrated what they have been working on. However, there is still quite a bit of work to be done according to Dev Jeffery Steadfast.

Now while this app is not available to Android users as of yet, we were luck enough to see a videoof Moonlight’s work being run on the Motorola Xoom and the Nexus S. Both of which showed it running quite smoothly with 35-55 frames per second.

I know many of us can not wait to be able to run this app on our Android phones. Once it is available it will open up many options not only for web page viewing, but also apps. We will be sure to keep you updated on any future news regarding Moonlight Dev Crew and their work on Silverlight for Android.

    Reply from Moonlight dev crew:

“…Moonlight has never been ported to iOS, Android, or other mobile/set top platforms. Unfortunately, there isn’t a solution to run Silverlight applications on these platforms today, and we do not currently have any plans to port Moonlight to any new platforms.”

    Dead end.
