Cisco Won’t Meet You On The Flip Side: Ending Flip Video Business

It seemed like the Flip Video Camera’s started a revolution of easy to use, easy to store, easy to whip out in a second video cameras.  It seemed like everyone of my journalist colleagues owned a Flip video camera just to get that last second video in a moments notice.  But now that’s all come to an end as Cisco has announced that they are killing off the Flip Video business rather than selling it.

Cisco confirmed this decision to Pocketlint.com. One of the theories is that with the video cameras on smartphones, like the latest Android devices, have put an end to the need for such a camera. However despite the rise of great video cameras onboard the latest phones, Kodak has released a new flip style camera. The Sony Bloggie also seems to be doing really well.

“We are making key, targeted moves as we align operations in support of our network-centric platform strategy,” John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO told pocketlint. “As we move forward, our consumer efforts will focus on how we help our enterprise and service provider customers optimize and expand their offerings for consumers, and help ensure the network’s ability to deliver on those offerings.”

We didn’t expect this move as Cisco was giving away Flip cameras at both CES and CTIA.

Although most like to go straight for their video camera on the phone, heavy duty users sometimes run into the problem that we do in that too much is going on onboard the smartphone that the secondary camera is great to have around. At a sub $200 price point it’s almost a no brainer in our gear bags.

Whatever the motivation for the decision Cisco isn’t talking numbers with anyone. They did say that they will continue to support Flip customers through their flipshare site and calls to Bestbuy, and other electronics retailers indicated that they were at least selling through inventory on hand and in distribution centers.
