Millennial Media, the largest independent mobile ad company in the country has released their February Mobile Mix report.
The Mobile Mix report, one of the most referred to sources in the mobile space showed Android on top again in the smartphone OS mix with 51%. IOS has 27% of the smartphone OS mix while Blackberry/RIM only saw 17%. of the smartphone OS mix.
Both Symbian and “other” outranked Windows in the survey period.
The February Mobile Mix report showed that the Verizon iPhone 4 accounted for 4.5% of iphones overall, however in a call with Thedroidguy.com, Millennial’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Mack McKelvey said that it wasn’t a fair reporting because Mobile Mix is a monthly monitoring and the iPhone 4 was only out for 2 weeks of the period. While she admitted that the rollout may have been less than Verizon expected other factors played into the iPhone 4 on Verizon including consumers waiting for their contracts to expire and for the iPhone 5. She also added that to date the Verizon iPhone 4 now accounts for 6% of the total amount of iPhones in the study.
Samsung was the top Android manufacturer, immediately followed by HTC while Rim/Blackberry beat out Motorola. Samsung grew 50% month over month to reclaim the number 2 position on the top 15 manufacturers ranking. The Samsung Galaxy Tablet made it’s way into the top 30 mobile devices as did the Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Forte and the Samsung Captivate.
Unlike survey samples Millennial Media’s data is calculated by the number of ads served on the devices, carriers and OS’s where Millennial’s ads are served. Since the purchase of AdMob by Google, Millennial is the largest independent mobile advertising company in the world.
