Shhhh don’t tell anyone but we think that Sony Ericcson will announce a handheld game system/Android phone hybrid called the Sony Xperia Play this weekend in Barcelona… That was one of the most ill kept secrets in the mobile world this year and it’s just about to get it’s day in the limelight.
For months we’ve all been reporting about the Sony Xperia Play with Pocket-Lint and Engadget breaking most of the news. In all of those leaked pieces no word was ever mentioned about US carriers. In fact we just ran a story two days ago that said the Xperia Play would come to Vodaphone, Orange and T-Mobile leaving out the UK carrier Three. Well today the above screen shot was taken from wirefly an online wireless phone clearing house which a lot of sites use for affiliate sales.
The actual screen was taken down right after the leak however if it was true and not just a placeholder than it looks like Verizon will get the Sony Xperia Play will go to big red. However again that could be a placeholder.
We think it’s actually heading to AT&T. AT&T is making some ferocious moves in the Android world and has already had a relationship with Sony Ericcson’s Android line selling the Xperia X10 and the X8. Although the sales weren’t enormous by any stretch but there is still that previous relationship.
Conversely, Sony Ericcson may be a little less than thrilled with their lackluster sales on AT&T and that’s why it’s headed to Verizon.
Make no mistake about it though, all this verbage and all this postulating is just to post the pretty picture from our friends at phonearena.com
