Small Profit Rise But Sales Still Slipping At Sony Ericcson

We know that Sony Ericcson is planning big things for next month’s Mobile World Congress, and their latest quarterly results announced Thursday, show they may need it.

The joint venture between LM Ericcson and Sony Corp, showed a slim profit of about $10.8 million dollars this quarter but have attributed that profit to cuts rather than sales. Even little profits matter as this is the fourth straight quarterly profit after two years of losses.

Phone sales continued to slide in Sony Ericcson’s fourth quarter as they only shipped 11.2 million units in the quarter ending December 31st which is down 23% from the same quarter last year. There average phone price was up 13% in the fourth quarter but down 12% compared to their average price in the second quarter.

In reports earlier this month Sony Ericcson re-affirmed their commitment to the Android platform and released the Sony Xperia Arc at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas at the beginning of the month.  Sony Ericcson is expected to release a Play Station like phone called the Zeuss or Xperia Play at MWC in Barcelona next month.  Analysts are 50/50 on the anticipated success of this device with the need to know more about how it will play games and what games it will play.
