Samsung’s Fudge Covered Froyo

As admitted Samsung enthusiasts stories like this are often checked, double checked and than pinged back to Texas.  Although we stand by the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Tab is the most impressive Android product of 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported today that Samsung’s sales numbers were way off base.

Samsung has shipped two million Galaxy Tabs however the sell through or sell out to the end user was according to Samsung spokesperson Ms. Lee Young Hee, “quite small”.  Young Hee was speaking during last Friday’s earnings call with Samsung investors and media.  Samsung reported their “sell in” numbers and then when pressed by an analyst gave this full disclosure:

“Well, your question was on sell-in and sell-out. As you heard, our sell-in was quite aggressive and this first quarterly result was quite, you know, fourth-quarter unit [figure] was around two million. Then, in terms of sell-out, we also believe it was quite small. We believe, as the introduction of new device, it was required to have consumers invest in the device. So therefore, even though sell-out wasn’t as fast as we expected, we still believe sell-out was quite OK.”

Statregic Analytics posted tablet results this morning stating that Android had 22% of the tablet market and that apple had lost 20 percentage points from the previous quarter.  In the Strategic Analytics report they credited the success of the Samsung Galaxy Tab as one of the reasons Android tablets were so succesful.  We definitely saw more than a handful of Samsung Galaxy Tabs in the hands of CES goers who didn’t have “press” badges on in Las Vegas earlier this year.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is still, regardless of “sell through” or “sell out” still the biggest competition for iPad to date.  We will see if that changes with the introduction of the Dell Streak on Wednesday and the Motorola Xoom later in February.

A Samsung spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal “most media accounts treat Galaxy Tab as “a noteworthy accomplishment.” He added, “I believe the company, overall, is on the same page.”
