The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Google is in talks to start an Android based newsstand to counter Apple’s current periodical offering.
The Journal said Google has had recent discussions with Time Warner’s Time Inc unit, Conde Naste and Hearst. Google has reportedly promised publishers they would take less than the 30% Apple takes for themselves.
Stephanie Tilenius, Google’s Vice President of e-commerce, is heading the Android newsstand initiative.
Google has released a statement basically saying they are always talking to publishers about ways they can work together. The publishers that spoke with the journal said that Google has not yet discussed a release date.
