Viewsonic Responds To Tablet Recall.. G-Tablet Getting Flash

As we reported yesterday the Viewsonic G-Tablet 10.1 Android 2.2 tablet was recalled from Staples shelves without warning citing a manufacturers defect.  We, along with others, speculated that it could be in part to software optimization and the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.  The Toshiba Folio 10″ tablet was recalled from the UK about a month ago and also sports the Nvidia chip set.

Viewsonic did not go in depth as to why they had the recall however Jeff Volpe, Vice President and General Manager for Viewsonic America’s made this statement

“We always listen to customers; while they love the hardware, they raised several issues about the user interface,” Jeff Volpe, VP and GM for ViewSonic Americas. “As a result, our software partner is releasing an upgrade that will address customer concerns. Along with great performance improvements, customers will have the flexibility to use both a standard Android interface as well as a user-customizable interface which has been significantly enhanced since the product launch.” Volpe went on to say, “ViewSonic is committed to its tablet endeavors and will continue with new announcements at CES in January.”

Viewsonic went on to say that this software update they are doing will be available by Christmas Eve (December 24, 2010) to current G-Tablet owners. Users will need to be on wifi and check off to allow the update. Viewsonic also advised that current users can download flash from any website that distribute Android applications and that Flash will be made officially available to G-Tablet owners by the end of January 2011.

We handled the G-Tablet at both IFA and a Pepcom event in New York City. We were very impressed with the graphics processing and the potential game playing functionality brought on by the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset. Nvidia Tegra 2 chips are the “celebrity” of this years CES show in the mobile space. We are expecting multiple announcements of both smartphones and tablets that will have the chips, including the Motorola Honeycomb tablet showed off by Andy Rubin earlier this month.

Viewsonic says they are committed to continuing their tablet product line.  Hopefully when the G-Tablet is brought back to market they will be able to secure more retail placement in the United States.
