Dell Streak Update to Android 2.2 and More

Posted on Nov 30 2010 - 3:31pm by Kyle

We’ve heard a lot about different color versions of the Dell Streak and it’s availability in Best Buy. We also know that the new Dell Streaks are reportedly coming out of the box with Android 2.2 “Froyo”. We also learned from Phandroid back in the early part of  November  that an OTA (Over the air) update was coming to existing Dell Streak Owners without an exact date in mind. Today is that date and we downloaded the OTA just now.

So far here’s what we’ve seen in the official update:
- A new “Dell Stage” home screen that sorts your 7 home screens into easy access. As with most custom UI’s you can take the Dell widgets off and load up your own apps

- The new “Dell Stage” functions the same in portrait and lanscape. The original Dell Streak was default to landscape except in the phone screen

- Swype added to the Dell Streak. On the downside, the Dell Streak’s original custom keyboard actually had a number pad on the right hand side that we liked which is absent on Swype and the Android keyboard. So far we can’t find the original Dell Streak Keyboard

- Android 2.2 and all it’s froyo goodness

- The AT&T network indicator now says “H” for HSPA + instead of topping out at 3G this may be cosmetic and we’ll test the speeds later

We’ll have more on this awesome update later meanwhile here’s the vid

Has this rolled out to all AT&T devices? I have a -31 base band and I do not see the update available at this time.

Is this a phased rollout to ATT customers? I have a -31 baseband but the update is not showing as of yet for me to recv OTA.

Not to be contrary, but I, at least, still do not have the update, and have just been told by both Dell AND AT&T that it’s been delayed again by AT&T so I hope you’re not all holding your breath waiting.

I just hung up with AT&T. First I called Dell, who told me they have the OTA update and are ready to release it but cannot as AT&T has once again delayed it. No one seems to know WHY, just that it has happened.

So I called AT&T and worked my way 3 levels up the support chain to try and get an answer. Ultimately I was told that no one at AT&T could tell me when it would actually be released. Feeling rather incredulous over that answer, I actually asked “Are you telling me there is no one, in the entire corporate structure of AT&T, who can tell me when they’re going to allow it to be released, and was told “That’s correct”. REALLY?

When I told them I would have to consider switching carriers and going to someone who COULD support releasing it, they even offered to talk to billing to eliminate any penalties associated with my doing so. REALLY???

AT&T is obviously willing to sacrifice customers, or at the very least their customers good will rather than be straight with them.

This is much the same as when I bought my first iPhone through them over two years ago. A major selling point for me at the time was that the device be able to tether to my laptop. “Well, it doesn’t now, but with the new software release coming out next month it WILL be”. Two and a half years later my iPhone still doesn’t tether (UNLESS I’m willing to drop my unlimited data plan) and now they’re doing the same thing with the FROYO release.

Once again AT&T has decided to put the screws to their customers and has lied to us all.

I loved my phone before the update now I wish I had not bought it thay have compleatly changed everything the keyboard was better switching on the bluetooth 3g wifi alarms all right in the upper corner was so handy if I could I would throgh it in the trash and get another and not do the update the only thing it lacked before was the flash player for some web sites I also liked the curser arrows the old keyboard had and the word choice bar every thing but the screan size is gone that I purchased the streak for in the first place what a false advertizing rip off scam thay pulled
