Over a million downloads for Angry Birds Beta!

Gaming for Android is not great. It’s cool, it’s fun, the titles we have right now amuse me for 5-10 minutes at a time, but comparatively it’s not great. We’ve started to see titles that have already been made popular by other smartphones start to move over to Android, and while I was hesitant at first that it would just fill the market with poor copies of games not optimized for Android, and it would just make the situation worse. We’ve seen some great examples proving me wrong, but none as successful as the beta for Angry Birds!

Angry Birds, if you are the one person in the world who hasn’t played it, is a very simply sling shot physics game with neat graphics and basic animations. This combination, however, has proven to be nothing short of completely addicting. The game doesn’t even have a set release date, it’s just a small beta. This small beta, however, has already crested one million downloads. This is a really good sign, and a clear beacon to game developers from every other platform to get up and move to Android before it’s too late.

By too late, I of course mean when Adobe Air comes to Android, and we see Flash games from all over the Internet move to Android quickly and easily. One thing is for sure, the next few months are going to see an explosive jump into quality gaming on Android.
